Only Vision can save us....

I'm not talking about "visions," but the vision of eyes open to see.

We find ourselves living in a generation where the horizons are filled with confusion and despair on the one hand, and on the other, filled with false premises and false promises.

God calls us out from it all, to lift our eyes above all.

He calls us to fix them on a land of "far horizons" and upon "the king in His beauty."

All that fills our world is but for a moment, and the tide of passing years soon wreaks havoc with everything that man tries to build.

God alone is Unchangeable - His foundations alone are Unshakable.

If we are to find peace and purpose we must find it beyond the turmoil and the hubris which surrounds us.

We must find it beyond our swirling emotions.
We must find it beyond the mind trying by its thoughts to perceive.

We must leave all behind and seek, seek, seek until in a dawning awareness we find our God.

We must seek until we find, for all our days, and for all our ways, the all-sufficient Creator-Savior ... the Author and the Finisher of the faith we place in Him.

Leonard as I saw him

Over the years since my father, Leonard Ravenhill, passed on to be with his Master there have been inquiries about his life, his trajectory, and the spring of his ministry.

I am hesitant as I start to write a few words at this time - hesitant as I attempt to show something of which I know so little.
I knew my father perhaps as well as anyone amongst us, and yet there
was a part of him which was hidden from view, a part which was forged by God through the years of his life.

I am hesitant also as I put in words something which some readers will examine looking for a secret to copy, while the Way of the Spirit is still as the wind; and we still cannot "tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth."
I am hesitant too because there are very few whose eyes have been opened to see and understand the realm of the Spirit of God which was the fount from which his life drew its meaning.
With the hesitation there is also a hope that some who read may see beyond the enclosing framework of the words, and find a path; a path which is always open to the God Who desires to reveal Himself.

There was something placed within him by God which was unreachable to the understanding, and unfathomable to all man’s capacities of discovery.
From whence came the intensity of passion, the holy jealousy, the consuming discipline to spend long hours of searching, prayer and supplication until the very end?
From whence came the the burning words, and the incandescence of spirit?

The things which worked this nature within him could barely be traced; he hardly spoke of the processes in his own life.
The merest of glimpses of the workings were to be seen - and one cannot know the part these things played in what God was doing in his life:

When as  a youth praying in the woods he suddenly found himself speaking in a language unknown.
When as a  young evangelist who, before he ever preached, sang his way across England.
The time  praying with his companions in evangelism when a visible flame was seen to touch each head.
The time he found faith for healing in a tent meeting when asked to pray for a woman bound in her wheelchair.
The time as pastor finding faith for his church -  faith for deliverance from lameness for a girl who dragged herself around with her hip on the floor - faith for deliverance, from insanity, from cancer.
The time when freed from his church connections he stepped out alone and ministered night after night in an apple storage shed in the Irish countryside.
What was the inner impact upon him there as he saw God come to the area, bringing fruits that yet remain?
The time preaching in the United States when he had to jump from the window of a burning hotel, and then spend months in bed-bound recuperation.
There was a rising from his bed at one or two in the morning, interrupting his sleep night after night through the later years of his life, as he looked for God's revelation.

These were some of the outward events, but through the passing years God wrought in him an ever growing awareness of the nature of God, and the dimension of His kingdom.
Through it all there was an awareness of the weight of the responsibility of his calling, and a faith in God’s ability to see it through.

Over the course of his life he worked with different church groups, and then once and again had to turn and leave them and go on alone with his vision of God.
He saw God as Absolute and His will as Non-negotiable.
The leader of one group confessed to my father with tears that his organization needed that which he had told them twenty years previously - but the moment had passed, now it was twenty years too late.
The leader of another organization lost his life after not paying heed to a warning from my father.

When he heard another Voice he had to leave behind people he loved, and follow ever onward in a consuming vision of God and His kingdom.
An inner quickening of the Spirit held him responsible for different horizons than those around him - and he walked in freedom.

When his ministry led him away from England to the United States he went forward into a new stage of his life as a Voice.
I believe he saw the past experiences of his life not as destinations, but merely as milestones in a continually unfolding pilgrimage.
He came with a message to the churches and to the nation - a message of repentance, surrender and holiness, always exalting the Lord above all.
It was a message whose aim was revival, a desire that God Himself would come and make things right and show forth his glory.

His was a lonely walk sustained only by the life that God allowed him more and more to understand and to possess.

There was a spiritual dimension, or rather, a dimension of the Spirit.
That which produced the volcanic flow of words was something which sprang forth as God saw the inner longings, sighs and groanings of his heart.
This was a portion which set him apart, a portion found alone with God - although somehow down through history it has always been the portion of men who truly met God.

At the end of his pilgrimage... let me quote from my wife:

"In the last months of his life he would repeat, in a sort of rapture of new discovery, the words of Paul to Timothy, “The blessed and only Potentate. The blessed and only Potentate”.
Here, he who was gifted with a beautiful ability to express his thoughts, found himself with no words to add.
His was merely to proclaim, and repeat again, what he had heard, and what he had seen, as the answer to the condition of a fallen world... ”The blessed and only Potentate.”

Standing by his bedside during his last days, although he was unable to speak and hardly able to move an arm, one was aware of an awesomeness about him.
David Wilkerson expressed it best when he visited and said: "There is a sense of the holiness of God in this place."
Yes, you were not by a sick and dying man, you felt you were in God's sanctuary where there was a constant dialogue between the Lord and His servant.
We played recordings of the hymns he so loved.
I was holding  his hand once while we listened, but then he freed his hand from mine and lifted it to heaven...  Worshipping ...
He continued to worship His majesty, from a spirit now so free.
The moment was sublime!!!
What perfect submission to His will… what perfect comunion...

I wonder now, was that uplifted hand also talking to me?   Was he begging me to turn my eyes and my concern away from him and to fix them on the Lord?
Was the hand uplifted in worship also his last message to me, to us?
He had pleaded that we would take the Lord as our all in all - now He was all he had, and he was satisfied.

He left us on a Sunday - the Lord’s day.
He left us at twelve noon - when the sun was at its height, and the day was perfect.
He left us when the Father called him home.

As he parted, triumph surrounded us, and peace, and glory, and heavenly joy in an inexplicable conciousness."

Miracle

Trust...in God which raiseth the dead. 2Cor1.9

Living down here in South America, I see only one thing that matters.
The thing that matters to me, and I believe to God, is that I see, and possess, the Real - the Living Reality of God and His realm.

Men live in an unreal world of unreal dreams.
Mankind has become untethered, and the dreams of today find their fruit in the disillusionment of tomorrow.

There is no building because there is no foundation.
There is no foundation because God has been left out of the plan.

Jesus came as the Word to bring the revelation of the Reality of God.
"Let there be"...God spoke, and the World and the Stars, the Animals and the Plants came into existence, into Reality.
As with the material world so with the spiritual - we must hear the Speaking Voice imparting the Life of God to our souls.
We must find there, Faith - that faith which is Substance, "that which has actual existence".

The Bible is all about that which is Real.
The prophets stood alone with God and proclaimed to an unseeing world this Reality.

The death that the enemy seeks to place upon us is simply the unawareness of Reality...an unawareness of the Life that flows from God.

Paul says God raises the dead.
God turns back the work of death.
From the place where death has overcome, God comes again and quickens.

He calls us to be with Himself - to be as He is in this world.
He calls us to Overcome, and Overcome, and Overcome.
He calls us to overcome all the things of smallness, and all the bondage with which this world's thought and action bind mankind.
Our calling is to overcome everywhere, all the time, until the Triumph is Complete - until He can manifest His Reality in us.

Where the Spirit Moves

The realm of the Spirit of God is so hidden from us humans.

The things we talk about, and the things we live, belong to different realms - and the essence has been lost.

Look at what we define as "Praise"...
True praise is not about finding the right words, the right music, together with the right music team, in order to get the congregation to sing with gusto.
This does not fit the definition of praise.

Praise is a spiritual thing - or it is nothing!
Praise is the expression of the Spirit of God in His children.
Praise lies in our Recognition of God...let me repeat that...Praise is our Recognition of God.

Austin Sparks once said years ago, that in the church we say,
"Let us sing hymn number xxx".
And he said, what we should say is, "Let us put God in the place which corresponds to Him, and the enemy in the place which corresponds to him, through the singing of hymn number xxx."
What a difference between empty words and music, and that which is a declaration of faith inspired by the Spirit.

There is no true praise unless I see God, and come to Him with all my heart, and soul and strength.

Let us take it a step further.
There is no spiritual Illumination unless I see it in God.
There is no Faith except I receive it from God.
There is no Life except it flow fresh to me from God.

Just as the breath I drew yesterday is valueless to maintain life today, so also God's portion of yesterday was for that day.
Today I need a new portion in order to be quickened.
Without God everything is Nothing.

The Spirit of God moved over the waters in creation...if we seek the Spirit to move over our lives he will be found, and we will truly live.

An Uncertain Future

An Uncertain Future...

As we gaze to the future one thing seems certain, increasing darkness awaits us.

It has been said that a people get the government they deserve, but it seems so many times that we also get a government which is made in our own image - the government is us!

The Hubris, the Bombast, the Narcissism and the Childishness of the leaders is merely the reflection of these same qualities in ourselves.

We, too flail around in life, and run in circles - insecure, inconstant and clueless.

Mankind is floundering and hell enlarges its mouth.
The church  is "taught by the precept of man" and the light of the Spirit is missing.
"These things ought not so to be".

Jesus came to give us Life but also Light, to bring us to a place where the past with its torment and failure is forever gone.
He desires to  give us a place where and life is quickened and empowered - sufficient for every circumstance, and every moment of every day.

Our world is sinking fast into darkness, and no one is able to lead us out.
We are lost unless we are able by the Spirit of God to see the length, and breadth, and height, and depth of the provision God has prepared for His own and for this time.

The promise is certain "And ye shall seek me, and ye shall find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart." Jer 29.13

Greater

Because Greater...
    is He...
that is in you... 1Jn. 4.4

Somewhere along the line we have lost the concept of greatness, and our lives are petty and darkened.

We have lost sight of the God Who all nature obeys,
the One Who holds the stars in their courses,
the One Who rotates the seasons,
Who commands the wind and the rain and    the waves.

How much do we know of this dimension "Greater"?

Have we seen Him greater than time ... greater than yesterday, and today and all our tomorrows?
...greater than all measure?

Do we know Him as the One Who is uncontainable,
the One Who overflows all our definitions?

Can we see Him as the "in you" greater?

Our challenge is to see this, to believe this, to reach out and seek until we find this.
Our challenge is to live in the place of God's measure, and not our own.

Our Need is to find the real dimension of the Kingdom of God.

God was the Creator at the beginning and God is the Creator at the end.

As my father used to say "The Christian is not a football for the devil to kick around."
God has provided "some better thing for us".
Let us reach for His provision.

The spiritual deserts of this world await transformation.
Creation awaits the presence of God in the lives of His children.

Perdition...or Prophet?

Even within The Way of Salvation we have managed to provide an alternative.

We speak of Spiritual Life, and yet treat it as if it were to be found by following a set of rules.
We follow Teachers who offer us a road map of conduct - a "how to" manual for successful Christian living.

Leaving the guidance of the Spirit which brought us to birth, we enter a wasteland of Law without Life.
A realm of joyless obedience, and weakening faith.
We thrash around as a drowning man caught up in forces beyond his strength.

When Israel escaped ..."by a prophet the Lord brought Israel out of Egypt, and by a prophet was he preserved." Hos.12.13

Exactly!

Deliverance came by the Spirit of God operating in a man.

If we are to be saved, we enter into that salvation only by the Spirit of God.
And if we are to continue in the path of salvation, we must continue only by the Spirit of God - "the flesh profiteth nothing"

The rules could not save in the time of the Old Testament and the rules cannot carry us today.

All our dependence on anything other than the working of God's Spirit in our lives is vain.

All the efforts of our aching souls hammering against the rock of our nature can only produce a broken cistern...
Years of effort can only produce a cracked recipient incapable of holding the Water of Life.

The world is lost.
How sad if the Christian is lost in the Way!

Oh, that we might find freedom in the ceaseless flow of the Life of God ministered through the Spirit of God.

SALVATION...How Saved are we?

Man is more concerned with the avoiding of Loss than to obtaining Gain.
It is said that many times at the end of life, people lament more what they did not do than the things they did do.

Sadly, we seem to have carried this thinking over to our understanding of Salvation.
We look more at what we are saved "from" than at what we are saved "to"...
Salvation "from" becomes the end of what we look for from God.
Maybe we would not express it this way - but we do live this way.

For God what we call Salvation is merely the door.
Our call is to possess a Kingdom.
The "to" is always greater than the "from".
The positive is always greater than the negative.
That which is ahead is always greater than that which is behind.

Salvation is God's door to infinite realms and to liberty without limits.

As Israel journeyed to the promised land, so before us there is a destiny, a place of wide horizons to be explored and possessed.

All our earthly journey is to that place where it is "on earth as it is in heaven"...a place where the powers of the Kingdom are Real and are Present.

God also gave them up...Rom. 1:24

A terrible fate...

How many times, in how many areas, does God give man up to the destruction of their sins?
How many times does He withold His hand and let man reap what he has sown?

This time, this day of ours, is not the same as other times.

Christian values, and simple moral values, are bleeding out in the streets of our cities.
Today there  is a total unawareness of what surrounds us.

Around our world everything human is being shredded, and we are living in the midst of the complacency of obliviousness.

As my father used to say, "when are we going to get serious about being serious?"

Is it perhaps because we have never really caught a glimpse of the true nature of the kingdom of God?

Is it that we have heard the words but never felt the passion?
...never felt the force that is always driving things forward toward the day of His appearing?
...never sensed the dimension of Reality?

Isaiah says, "we all do fade as a leaf...our iniquities like the wind have taken us away...there is none that stirreth up himself to take hold of Thee."

Can we "take hold" for a lost generation, for a lost world, for our children and our children's children?

Samaria...

I continue to be amazed at Jesus in Samaria.
His commission and His anointing was to bring the message of the Kingdom of God to Israel.
Yet here...He makes an intermission in His time of ministry and finds "He must needs go" through Samaria.

It is as though for a momentary interlude Israel did not exist.

Here in Samaria He speaks to an Outcast among the Outcasts...and His message is understood and received.

Here He opens the depths of the gospel message.
Here He speaks of an inner well ever springing.

The Beauty and the Pathos of the moment are overwhelming...

While Israel saw only the external, the superficial, here in a land beyond Israel's limits the truth was made bare.
A lost multitude without any of the clinging forms of religion heard with a needy hearts and opened their lives to the Words of Life.

The doors of revelation were flung open and the Secret of Eternal Life was made manifest.

The Word echoes within me today, "a well of water springing up into Eternal Life".

Our Time...Our Place..

"for such a time as this..." Esther 4:14

As with a pile of rotting compost, at the beginning of the twentieth century the fermentation of society produced a spontaneous combustion, which after anarchy and uprising, led to the consuming fires of the first World War.

Today, as it was a hundred and twenty years ago, systems of government and commerce cease to be viable.
And today, as then, there are no answers on the horizon.
Today the temperature in the pile of compost which we call civilization is reaching critical heat... and no one knows how or when it will explode into flame.

Our day is fraught with crisis, it is not a time for apathy.
There is no status quo ... everything is in a state of flux.

The God of Measure (the God whose atom oscillating at 430 trillion times a second is accurate they tell us within a second in 15 billion years), this God of Perfect Measure, knows perfectly our out-of-control world, and He knows His own.

Ours is the responsibility to pray, obey and trust until His kingdom becomes clear to us...until in His light we see Him eternally Sufficient to sustain His purposes.

We have:
A responsibility to Stand while all is falling,
A responsibility to Show Forth a Salvation which rises high and firm over the chaos of man's endeavors, man's world.

Unless we find this, our position in God, we have No Message... No Word... and No Authority in the midst of the coming cataclysm.

Now shalt thou see what I shall do...  Ex. 6:1

Now shalt thou see what I will do...

There was an unrealized ''what" in the life of Moses.
    There was a  ''what''
                      that was a Call
                          and a Commission.

Moses had endured forty years of desert preparation.
He had seen the beginning of his ministry but, so far
nothing of the Fulness ... no real unfolding of what God had spoken.

Moses' last words before this word from God was a cry of "wherefore'' and ''why?''
He found himself at the end of his faith, and resources ... blind to the way forward... Egypt all around, and the people still enslaved.

Moses question is
    ''How about Now?
        What is going on Now?''

Is it hard to see the parallel in our lives...our own ''what''... the God given word, vision, dream?

How long will our hope remain unrealized?
The processes of God have led us to vision, can they lead us to fulfilment?

In our lives, can we see the dimension of God's ''What'' and not our own?
Can we see beyond earth's horizons and our own      human limitations?
Can we start to see the limitless realms of God?
Can we, dare we, reach out to possess realms            which are not dependant on our natural abilities?

As for Moses, so for us there awaits a place where God says, ''Now shalt thou see what I will do.''

"His going forth is prepared as the morning"  Hosea 6:3

Prepared...a picture of God arising as the sun over the darkness of the night.

Prepared...a Vision we need in our day.

Prepared...in this broken day of ours where the old order of things is falling apart, and the new is as yet unknown and unproved, and we suspect its ability to bring about the change we need.

Everything around us is clothed in uncertainty but God's plans are as certain as the morning.
    His Coming is certain,
        His Working is certain,
            His Triumph is certain.

God wants us to Look from our broken world and see Him Ruling and Working in the midst of the years of our lives.
He desires us to see beyond the Shadows, the Obscurity and the Dungeon.

Prepared...God is ready to bring to pass all His work in us, and through us
Our lives were meant to be a day by day unveiling of that which He gives...without impediment, "a morning without clouds.''

Can we ask Him to roll away the clouds and show us the Clear Shining in all its glory...and not be satisfied until we find ourselves seeing only His Light, knowing only His working in our lives?

Today...if ye will hear His voice.

Today..."yesterday's gone, and tomorrow may never be mine".

Does my response to God today correspond to the measure of what He gives to me?

In our world everything, always, is given by measure.
We give in a measure which corresponds to our estimation of the worth of things.
In God's world there can be no measuring - with God a thing is either of eternal worth or it is worthless.

Time is a thing, a thing to be "redeemed" (bought back).
Bought back from the time which our trivial world of man demands of us.
Bought back from our internet, our television, and all our time wasting activities.

The time redeemed becomes for us a part of eternity;
a part of the kingdom of God.

We move out from our things to the Presence of the One Who is eternal.

We move into that eternity which is not merely length of days, but an eternity as broad and as high and as deep as it is long.

We come to the sphere of the infinite, where God can begin to teach us of Himself, of His purposes, of His promises, and that all things "in Him are yea and in Him amen."

How can we hear?

How can we hear?

When there are so many voices c
alling?
When so many clueless writers flood us with so many clueless words?
When so many who try to enlighten us are themselves living in shadows?

Let us Live this year in fulness of Life.
Let us Live by shutting ourselves off from the world around - from its humdrum existence and its insistent clamor.

Let us concentrate all our attention to find that which is not of this world, to find in God a Living Fountain, a Quickening Flame and a faith which will triumph day by day by day.
